Overview:
Ashley entered the Intellectual Property field in 2021 after earning a First Class MEng (Hons) degree in Civil & Structural Engineering from the University of Manchester. At Barker Brettell, he specialises in drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to mechanical engineering and software innovations. Ashley has extensive experience in the technical areas of Gas Generation Systems, Compressors, Medical Devices, Construction Tools, Power Cables, and Moisture Separation Systems.
In addition to his technical expertise, Ashley is actively involved in professional development initiatives. From 2023 to 2024, he held the position of Honorary Secretary for the Charters Institute of Patent Attorney’s (CIPA) Informals committee, which is a group of CIPA Students operating under the supervision of the CIPA Council. His additional responsibilities included organising conferences for CIPA members, advocating for a variety of training subjects for CIPA Students—such as business development, client relations management, and networking—and coordinating events across the UK.
Experience:
- Ashley’s background in the Engineering industry is rooted in his contribution to the infrastructure development of Northstowe, Cambridge, where he was involved in the design and implementation of various projects. These initiatives included the installation of sustainable drainage systems, reinforcement of bridges, service provision, and highway construction, showcasing his understanding of complex engineering principles.
- Before transitioning to the Intellectual Property profession, Ashley undertook a research scholarship at the University of Oxford, where he conducted an in-depth investigation into the dynamics of coffee-ring formation. His research focused on the impact of varying evaporation rates on the formation process, as well as the effects of different evaporative laws on the height and width of the coffee ring. Furthermore, he explored the possibility of entirely suppressing coffee-ring formation, demonstrating his ability to approach complex problems with a scientific mindset.
