Propulsion will play a key part in the aerospace sector’s goals for decarbonisation. Three key green propulsion technologies are currently being developed by a range of manufacturers: electric propulsion, hydrogen propulsion, and sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). All these technologies present a broad scope for potential innovation. As well as energy sources for propulsion, there are also many opportunities for innovation in the design of physical propulsion components, for example, in the design of gas turbine engines and the use of distributed propulsion in vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.
