Aircraft today are built from thousands of individual components. These components all have their own requirements providing potential for innovation, but the opportunity for invention is also presented by the design and manufacture of larger parts of aircraft and aircraft as whole. This includes aircraft architecture, including the arrangement of fuselage, wings, and other large parts of an aircraft, as well as structural design, wing design, selection of materials, and manufacturing techniques including additive manufacturing as well as traditional manufacturing techniques. The design and manufacture of different types of aircraft, including fixed wing aircraft, tiltrotor aircraft, rotorcraft, and other vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft all present an opportunity for innovation.
