European patent protection process made easy for U.S. clients

Barker Brettell provides cost-conscious, in-house patent specialists with European expertise

Barker Brettell, the UK head-quartered intellectual property (IP) firm, is hosting a series of webinars for US in-house clients on all aspects of European and international patent practice.

The webinars focus on European patent filing and understanding paralegal and attorney roles in patent workflows, and how U.S. and U.K. paralegals can partner effectively.

With more than 60 attorneys and over 30 paralegals, Barker Brettell has a strong track record working with U.S. in-house clients, many of whom have decades of experience performing as a flexible extension of U.S. patent teams.

The Massachusetts Paralegal Association is hosting the first two sessions in April and May by three members of Barker Brettell’s patent team: Anne Bate, patent paralegal & technical workflow specialist; John Lawrence, senior partner; and Yvonne Johnson, managing partner.

Talking points will include:

  • A year on from the introduction of the Unitary Patent (UP)  – what are clients actually doing?
  • Ways to save money at the European Patent Office (EPO);
  • Unitary Patent Court (UPC) opt-out compliance, data gathering, data checking;
  • Unitary Patent and European Patent validation cost comparisons for multiple scenarios;
  • Foreign filing licences;
  • Micro entity rules, and how to achieve up to 30% reduction in EPO official fees;
  • Recording assignments – discussing requirements and costs under the new EPO system.

John Lawrence said: “We believe a personal, direct relationship with a trusted European partner helps clients enhance their foreign filling decisions, and reduce their overall patent spend. ‘Better value for money’ is our core philosophy, and we constantly strive to achieve this for our clients.”
